Mid-Market Companies

Middle market organizations make up the “real economy,” which are too big to be small and too small to be big. Many firms are experiencing challenges around resources, labor, technology, innovation, and regulation but conditions in the economy remains on a path for growth, even as the market struggles with elevated inflation.

 

According to the “U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Q3 2022 Middle Market Business Index”, Top-line sentiment among executives of midsize companies improved to a seasonally adjusted index reading, up 7.3 points from the second quarter producing 3.4 million jobs over the first seven months of the year. Those businesses hiring more workers rose sharply to 58% in the third quarter, from 47% in the prior period.

 

CyberSecurity and Supply Chain continue to evolve

Cybersecurity has been a main concern for middle market companies as organizations encountered risks, from threats related to the COVID-19 pandemic to political conflicts and economic uncertainty underscored by the war in Ukraine. Senior executives at middle market companies have heightened concerns with

cybersecurity and data privacy, the frequency and severity of attacks, and ongoing concerns. 

 

Supply Chain is a significant hurdle

Supply chain challenges also present a significant hurdle, with middle market firms reporting they have been directly impacted by supply chain disruptions or constraints.  This challenge is amplified for certain industries, including middle market technology companies, financial services, and middle market manufacturers.

 

At the same time, these companies are grappling with a tight labor market which is straining middle market companies' employees and hindering growth. Almost half of middle market companies are extremely challenged by finding and hiring employees with the right skills for the jobs available. Slightly more than half of these companies struggling to hire say employees are working long hours and more shifts.  Companies’ demand for workers in industries like healthcare and IT expects hiring is likely to continue.
